Mom & ME & Mom is a story of two strong women Maya and Vivian who survived the tough circumstances of life but ultimately both learned to stand up for each other’s support. The story is carrying so many narratives including how society is tough for black women, marital issues, teenage pregnancy, and emotional trauma caused by familial relationships. Vivian was a part of a family where the father figure was supposed to be the strongest family member and he wanted his children to be strong enough that they can beat up anyone. Vivian was the strongest one among her siblings and her dad called her his “girl boy”.In 1924 Vivian got married to a man of his choice and for that, she had to leave her family. Along with her husband, she moved to another town and gave birth to 2 boys and a daughter Maya. Soon after the babies Vivian left his husband and the children were sent to their father’s mom because none of the parents were willing to bear the responsibility of 3 kids.
Maya along with her siblings was growing quickly so the grandmother decided to send them back to their father who had already married. The stepmother was not so kind to Maya and she escaped from her father’s house, she survived the homelessness for a few days and then went back to her mother Vivian who was already struggling with her life. Maya got pregnant at school and that’s when she realized how amazing and understanding her mother was. Their bond start to heal and she started calling Vivian Mom, before Maya got pregnant she used to call Vivian “Lady” because of the disgust Maya had for her mother.
Maya gave birth to a boy and remarried even though Vivian already predicted that the marriage won’t sustain for long, However, Maya Married Tosh and got divorced a few months back. Vivian supported her and stood by her even at that time, all the support from her mother made Maya stronger and got a job opportunity as a professor of American studies. Vivian was not doing well as she got lung cancer and at last, she died after remaining in a coma for days. Vivian proved herself a strong mother and left a message for Maya that anything can be achieved with boldness.
